Lois Lee is the founder of Children of the Night, a shelter for juvenile girls who have been arrested for prostitution. Instead of going to detention centers or group homes, these girls get medical treatment, counseling, and go to school*. In 28 years, 4,000 girls have stayed there. My list of heroes is pretty short, but I think Lee deserves a spot on it.
